A Message
from the President
My Fellow Chautauquans,
We all belong to a very special fraternity of men, women and children who have made this great mystery called Chautauqua a part of our lives. I say mystery because, since 1874, great minds have attempted to define Chautauqua and yet there still remains something missing. I think I may have discovered the reason why!
Chautauqua, like life, is both “never-changing” and
“ever-changing.” It is never-changing because its source is
the source of all, which we call God. It is ever-changing because
its creations - the four pillars of religion, education, the arts
and recreation - will grow and evolve into new forms and
understanding as long as man continues to exist. Herein lies
the mystery of stability and variety which has sustained the
Chautauqua Institution in
The Board of Trustees of the Florida Chautauqua Assembly, Inc. is “entrusted” to honor, preserve and further the Chautauqua Idea. As such, the Trustees have not only attended the summer Assemblies at the Chautauqua Institution but have sought out the officers, leaders and best minds there in order to learn how to present Chautauqua in DeFuniak Springs, both now and permanently in the future.
Each year we will present a theme. This year’s theme, “Where Are We Now?” asks the poignant question facing all of us. Our world is changing in so many ways, but if we remember that which is “never-changing,” we can go boldly into the “ever-changing” future to embrace whatever life has to offer with confidence. Dr. John Heyl Vincent, co-founder of Chautauqua, always said “Never Be Discouraged.” We will present the 2008 Assembly with a vigil of positive confidence and not waver.
The 2008 speakers promise to be some of the best minds available to answer our question, “Where Are We Now?” We will attempt to reach, spiritually, that peace which passes all understanding. Our arts offerings will delight and fulfill, all in a recreational setting of beauty and reflection.
I look forward to spending the Assembly with you and offer you a
hearty “Onward and Upward!” See you then, in 2008:
February 21st to 24th.
